SD-Cards and Such ~ Fallin' in Luv with them 20080812

It takes time to fall in luv.... especially with stuff like SD-Cards, flash memory stuff.

And these gizmos, tiny things, now hold up to 8GB comfortably (low error rate i hope). So i got myself two 8GB systems recently - Sandisk Ultra-II 8GB SDcard (S$50), and a Sandisk MemoryStick PRO Duo 8GB (S$86).

Now, it is interesting as the uses get interesting.

Plug and Play
With USB, the WINDOWS system recommends you "dismount" the ThumbDrive, then pull out. With the SDcard, you just pull out.

Many PCs have CardReaders, handling all manner of cards.

NAMING Names
Ha, what a simple and naive discovery that i can NAME the CARD at the root level. Meaning i slot the card into the PC, it usually shows "Removable Disk (I..)" and most times i could not figure out which slot the Card went into. I now name the CARD (a few characters) and then my card has an ID! The ID shows instead of "Removable Disk". When i plug it into another PC, the same ID shows! Now i am somebody.

Cameras and Film
It used to be that when we borrow a camera, the cumbersome film within needs to be completely shot off before we pull out the roll. With the SDcard, we simply borrow the expensive camera (without a card within) and shoot all we want (or just 1x shot), pull out my card, and return the camera. And you can use different cameras on the same card (yupz, a rather polygamous idea).

The Card within the Camera is just a Data Card, and you still can have folders and files of say, mp3 music, alongside. The camera does not care, and creates it's own DCIM folder of shots.

Files Transfers
With 8GB and fast write-read, it seems so easy just to drop stuff into a Card, unplug, replug into another PC and transfer (in your own home or workspace with multiple PCs). This network sharing folders and DVD writing and even the USB thumbdrive is obsoleted in some ways.

Media Players and KIDs learning
OK, i am not that great a dad (a poor one i must say) - so i get this PSP SONY for No4 kid. Besides his classical piano masterclass with a Maestro, and his twin screen PC with a powerful graphics card, he does not much look at other things. So i had a lesson of SET THEORY with him the other day, and decided to shoot the Summary, digital pix, and other chapters, and wahlah, used his SONY MemoryStick PRO (where his other game files are) and then he reads the notes from his PSP! OK, i could be more strict and Singaporean father like, but i am not a good dad, so this compromise. I sms him occasionally to ask him to read his Maths notes from the PSP (5 MegaPixel clear macro shots and zoomable). New ways to luv and learn, i guess.

I suppose you can shoot all manner of INFO and have the kid read them on their Creative ZEN Media Player, ipod Touch and such, and all MobileCell Phones with Video and Photo view capabilities.

TINY Carry Around
And it's tiny, so tiny. You can have a pile with you anytime. It's like BOOKS in a Card pile, many books to read from a card.

GIFT of a Card MEMORY
Memories make up what's left in life. OK, stop the sob sob.... Now, i know it's a small box for a Birthday or some festive occasion. A CardReader and 8GB (or 16GB) of a Card make a good gift in such modern times. Give it....

So go get yourself a Card. It can be the greatest self-help thing for yourself.
